To Dry Drop or Not

When heading out to the Esopus Creek in the Catskills in the Fall and trying figure out what to use and where to begin around the Phoenicia area, I sometimes decide to tie on a large October caddis and use it for its high buoyancy and visibility and target the faster water. It’s also convenient to hang a Caddis Pupa or ISO nymph off that fly that will also help you to prospect for fish. Sometimes the big ones will snatch the October Caddis before it speeds by them in fast water. Other times they will grab the nymphs. Either way your odds and confidence will improve if you decide to dry drop and begin covering water with this method. Good luck.
